Jeff Currier's Fly Fishing Adventures
"Fly Fishing in Africa"
In
the Fall of 2005, Jeff and his wife Granny loaded their backpacks and
headed to Africa for two months. The primary goal of the trip was to fly
fish for Tigerfish. With Lusaka, Zambia as their base, they bussed and
hitchhiked through Zambia, Botswana, Namiba, Zimbawe and Malawi. During
this time they fished many of the great waters these countries had to
offer.
Remember, these are emails written from run-down computers, from some of
the most remote areas of the world. Jeff's grammar and spelling is not
the best under these conditions.
Enjoy the travelogue and photographs.

Currier's Personal Journal, October 17, 2005
- You would think in a malaria ridden regions we might find a
room with a closable window but so far (only 2 nights) our price
point accommodations come only with bars. Upon arrival in Lusaka
we quickly noticed and figured okay, no mosquitoes here and
considered not starting our malaria medication - good thing we
did! By midnight our first night in Lusaka my leg was hanging
out of our mosquito net and I got whacked pretty good. Yikes! No
big deal ... |

Currier's Personal Journal, October 30, 2005
- The days are getting long down here. Sun is up by 5:30 and not
down till 8. Good stuff! However, by 8 am expect near 95 degrees
and by 2pm you better be tough as balls! I believe I could fry
and egg on any metal parts of the boats we've fished from at mid
day. Touch it, and you burn. Fortunately, the old Granny and I
have been on the water 7 days already ... |

Currier's Personal Journal, November 14, 2005
- It feels like Africa these days. Honestly, last email we were
pumped as heck about the fishing and animals, but the fact that
we were in Africa wasn't all that obvious. It was basically the
end of the African winter and the trees like the Boababs and
Acacias had no leaves. Also, we were typical Americans, kind of
keeping to ourselves and not spending enough time enjoying ...

Currier's Personal Journal, November 15, 2005
- We are amidst a long hard day in Lusaka, Zambia. We are trying
to do some errands such as burn CDS of photos, figure out what
to do with the rest of our trip, buy a bus ticket, get money
etc. It’s hard to do as it is about 100 degrees and Lusaka
aint exactly a sweet town. And nothing is working out. We have
wasted most of the day as we messed around with help from a
travel agent ... |

- Enough talking non fishing. Screw all whitewater! We are
presently in Eastern Zambia on the edge of South Luanga National
Park. I may have time to tell you of the horrible 2 days of
ground travel we had but 1st a fishing story or two. Last March
I was in South America and met a guy by the name of Chris
Bailey. Chris is owner and host of TV show "Reel Outdoors"...

Currier's Personal Journal, November 24, 2005
- As all bus travel days go, we had to look forward to getting
scrunched into a mini van in 100 degree temperature and dealing
with touts galore. I have seen nearly everything you can imagine
for sale at bus stations, but today I saw something new. A kid
came up to my window while we were waiting to fill up with a
tray of birds. Not live birds - grilled birds, and I don't ... |

Currier's Personal Journal, December 05, 2005
- Nearly 2 months, 20,000 cast, 2 broken rods (only), 9 exotic
species, 5 new countries, 4 flat tires, 1 shattered windshield,
5 complete break downs, more than 2,000 miles of local bus
travel, less than 2 busted off tigerfish and a partridge in a
pear tree, the list of our new experiences and craziness goes on
for about 8 pages I'm sure! Granny and I completed 47 hours of
travel from ... |
