Its Rarely Only About the Fishing

Shannon-McCormickIt was an enjoyable day with our friend Shannon McCormick and his family at their cottage in Wisconsin.  Shannon and I used to fish the Henry’s Fork together back in the 80’s.  I hadn’t seen him in at least five years.  He moved away from the Yellowstone Country a while back but like with all friends, we keep in touch.  He’s up doing his annual WI visit and he tracked us down.

flyfishingWe casted 9-weights and big flies for musky on his lake but todays scorching 96° temperature shut down not only the musky, but about every living thing in Wisconsin.  After a couple hours of unsuccessful casting and rowing we settled to a shady corner of his property and enjoyed a few icy cold ones, burgers and brats.

musky-fishingIt’s rarely only about the fishing these days.  Unless it’s some exotic difficult species many miles from home, I just want to get out and have a great time.  Though the heat knocked us down and the fish didn’t cooperate, it was a magnificent last day of spring.  Granny and I will kick off the summer tomorrow with a few casts on our drive back home.

  1. “It’s rarely only about the fishing these days.”
Probably what makes you such a good fisherman.

  2. Keeps me calm and helps me think every tricky scenario out clearly without any pressure to “need” to catch a fish.
