AZ Ends with a Huge Largemouth

urban-flyfishingSince Friday when I added the Sonora and desert suckers to my species list, fishing was tough for Granny and I.  We fished for a few hours on Saturday on one of my favorite canals in Phoenix.  There were plenty of fish but we were after the grass carp.  Granny and I both had about five of them devour our flies and we either missed the take altogether or we lost them.  They are always tough but we were off our game.

Arizona-fishingOn Monday we fished with Steve Berry and Mike Faulkinbury on some urban lakes.  A big storm is moving in and temps dropped to the low 60°s and the wind blew hard.  Granny and I were after more grass carp but they were hard to find.  In fact, fish in general were hard to find other than the random not feeding fish along bottom.

azMike and I were persistent however.  While I continued hunting carp Mike was crawling nymphs along bottom.  It paid off.  Mike landed one of the best largemouth bass of his life.  A beautiful fish!

Faulkinbury-flyfishingIts been a good stopover here in Arizona.  Tomorrow Granny and I head for CA.  Wednesday night I speak to Fresno Flyfishers then over the weekend it’s the Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show.

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
