Smallmouth Madness Continues in NH

Becky-Rose-fly-fishingThe one person that loves to fish but hardly ever gets to go is my younger sister Becky.  She lives here in Wolfeboro but spends most her time running my niece Sierra and nephew Eli to continuous events from gymnastics to golf practice while her husband Don works.  They do some fishing together from shore in Back Bay but overall she’s the one doing the odd jobs while others get to fish.  Today was her morning and we got out together for the first time in a couple years.

flyfishing-wolfeboroBecky is extremely qualified with a fly rod.  When she was in college she spent summers in Jackson Hole just so she could trout bum with me and Granny.  It’s a bummer she’s so busy she doesn’t get to fish much.  That’s why today all she wanted was one nice smallmouth on the fly.  I told her this could be arranged!

Jeff-Currier-smallmouth-bassI took her right out to my favorite spot.  This was my third time here this week.  That’s probably why it started out really slow at first.  It doesn’t take smallies long to get educated.  Eventually I got into a run of three nice ones in a row.  Two of which were my biggest up here in NH in years.  This included this stunner of a fish.

bassAs I always preach, persistence pays off.  Becky and I veered off from my normal rocky shoals to one I haven’t fished yet this trip.  I missed a big smallie that chased me when I started to cast.  Becky got her fly right in there and hooked up.

smallmouth-bassThe best thing about these Lake Winnipesaukee smallies is their jumps.  Every single smallie you hook is airborne in an instant.  And most, including this one of Becky’s, jumped at least five times.  These fish are spectacular!

catch-and-releaseWe called it a morning around 8 AM.  By now the sun was out and it was time for swimming.  I love this getting up at 4-ish because before 9 it feels like I’ve already had a full day.

I didn’t fish again.  The temps rose to the upper 80°s like they have every day since I got here.  Instead of going out I worked on my blog and some photo editing.  Every year I update all my PowerPoints. This year my Warmwater Fly Fishing show will have amazing updates with all the great bass fishing I’ve had this month so far.

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
