More Bad Weather puts Sammy’s GT on Hold

Straits-of-Hormuz-fishingThis has been a challenging expedition to the Indian Ocean that began with a cyclone in the Seychelles.  That storm sent us to Dubai early but rare rains messed Dubai up.  And today in Musandam we got on the water very early trying to beat an incoming storm.  We had rain and wind right from the start anyhow.  So much wind that we only lasted on the water for a few hours.  We didn’t see any fish today.  Sams GT quest will go on.

fish-MusandamSometimes you have trips like this.  I can think of far more perfect trips than ones that were tough.  I always say, “If you keep playing cards, you’re going to lose a few games”.  We got a loss out of the way this trip.  Thank goodness we tore it up in Southern Oman last week so this trip wasn’t a true loss for us like it was for some of my Seychelles guests that went home without a cast.

fishing-Middle-EastWe left Musandam late afternoon and are presently traveling by taxi back to Dubai.  We arrive at Nick Bowles house in two hours.  Nick is cooking up something delicious.  We’ll relax and catch up.  Then at 11 PM Sammy heads to DXB to fly home at 2 AM.  I’m going to hang with Bowles family a couple extra days and perhaps get that morning shot on the Dubai queenfish at least once.  Stay tuned!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
