No Major Trip Goes Without a Little Chaos

Dubai-flyfishingI’m resting happily here in Dubai after hosting a magnificent Yellow Dog Seychelles trip.  I’m at my good friend Nick and Michelle Bowles house.  Nick is the founder of Ocean Active which is the top fishing guide service in all of the Middle East.  I stop in to fish with Nick every time I pass through this neck of the woods.  Always on my way home from the Seychelles.

giant-trevallyIt was wild getting here.  Since my post late December 8th , I and my 11 anglers had to depart Cosmoledo Atoll, the land of GT’s.  This meant a boat ride to Astove.  A flight from Astove to Alphonse Island.  Then another flight from Alphonse on to Mahe, Seychelles.  We were supposed to reach Mahe by 3 PM then take Covid tests and get required negative results in time for our 11 PM international flights.  Unfortunately the seas were so rough our boat ride was late.  In reality it didn’t matter because the flight to get us was two hours late.  We didn’t get to Mahe until 5 PM.

Jaron-Simon-flyfishingThe two hour delay cost many of us our Covid test appointments.  Those heading back to the US brought self-Rapid Tests.  You need strong internet to complete these and the Eden Bleu Hotel where we were at ran low on power.  It was a miracle that everyone got tests done and results in time for their flight.

Mike-Lodge-flyfishingThree of us came to Dubai and U.A.E. requires a negative PCR Covid Test result.  In order to get this type of test and results in less than three hours before our flights cost us $550 !!!!  I’m a little ticked off to say the least.

But I’m here in Dubai.  I arrived at 4 AM this morning.  Michelle has a day off and we’ve been chilling out all day.  The skies are clear and the wind is light.  The temperature is about 85°.  Nick is on his way home from Oman and tomorrow we are going out on Dubai Harbor to wreak havoc on the queenfish.

Currier-YellowdogI’d like to close the books on a fabulous trip to the Seychelles with 11 great folks.  This was a Yellow Dog Flyfishing hosted trip and you too can join me on one in the future.  Just contact me or go directly to my friends at Yellow Dog.

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
