My lady and I hit the road at a reasonable time this morning. It was just after 6. It was about an hour drive then we dropped our blue boat down a muddy slot on absolutely gorgeous Wisconsin river. Today’s target, muskellunge.
My shoulder doesn’t need any extra big stick chucking so I took the oars and watched Granny in action. This river moves gently and I as able to hold the boat with ease allowing Granny to pick apart every inch of good looking water.
Unfortunately there wasn’t much happening. Believe me, the water looked great and Granny touched it all. I’ve in fact seen a few muskies on this stretch. But today the reputable fish were having none of it with Granny. She nabbed a 10” smallmouth bass which provided some good entertainment for a bold white-tailed deer.
We river fished musky today specifically because of our ten day weather forecast. It’s been a cool wet summer until yesterday. Now things look to dry out and get hot. Musky tend to hide during the heat of summer so in a week they could be hard to find. Furthermore, its never good to hassle musky on the rivers during hot weather. Lakes not such a big deal as they can retreat to deep cooler water.
Granny tossed diligently for two hours straight. Then we took a break by tying off to a tree in the shade. The day was heating up and we enjoyed refreshing brews. Once we got moving again Granny wanted the oars not the rod. Naturally, it was the one time a hungry musky was lurking. I landed a gorgeously barred musky of about 28”. I’ll take it, but I’d have much rather watched my girl go tight.
We packed it in before noon. It was an incredible summer morning and with the early start we got our moneys worth. While tomorrow will likely be a mow the lawn and do errands day, we might squeak out one more musky day on another river later in the week. As long as the moving waters remain a bit high and cool another 48 hours. We’ll play it by ear!
