Who Says You Shouldn’t Fish on Weekends?

smallmouth-bassBob and I rarely fish on weekends because no doubt, here in Wisconsin the waterways are for sure at their busiest.  But suddenly the days of summer are passing rapidly.  Too rapidly.  We decided to take a long haul down numerous dusty roads to a river where the mosquitos and horseflies carry you away.  There was nobody else.

smallmouth-bassAnother good reason for fishing today is that the smallmouth bass fishing is presently as good as it gets.  My first summer here in WI, 2022, it was decent.  I was impressed.  Last year, as we started going to the right places, it was excellent.  This year, now that the water levels have finally come down, we actually have this stuff dialed and the smallie fishing is exceptional.  Today the fish were on every grassy bank as well as some of the sand flats.

To escape society on a Saturday is an ordeal.  The dusty roads and bloodsucking bugs were only part of it.  We chose a river almost too small to navigate.  We ran into several bad snags that completely blocked passage.  We had to portage the raft twice to get around fallen trees.  That’s when you truly get annihilated by bugs!

smallmouth-bassBut the fishing was outstanding once again.  While the size of the smallies weren’t like a few days ago, the consistent 12-14 inch bass isn’t something to snub.  These are amazing hard fighters and we lost more than we caught.  They wrap you in the wood and jump and shake a fly better than most.

smallmouth-bassOk – no fishing the next two days.  It will be hard to hold back but I need a couple days to rehab and rest the shoulder, complete some Cliff Fly Box art, yardwork and I need to get packed for a three day Texas saltwater adventure with friends that takes place next week.  Stay tuned!

I can’t lie, you’re selling me on WI fishing! And get that shoulder rested and ready!

Yup, I should tone it down some but there’s plenty of water here. And my shoulder will be ready. I’m used to the pain these days!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
