A Bob’s Lake Variety Pack

flyfishingBob and I planned on doing something big today but unfortunately truck trouble for Bob grounded us.  Well, not exactly grounded because Bob lives on a small lake.  Instead of not fishing, I zipped over his place around 8 AM and we launched his lake boat with my Exploder.

bluegillThis was by no means a hardcore fishing plan.  Once I learned of Bobs truck trouble I shifted my focus to enjoying an afternoon Cubs game while working on some Cliff Fly Box orders.  So that too kept today light because I wanted to get home by 1 PM.

We ended up fishing for four hours and fishing was excellent.  We picked up the full variety of fish.  We started off with a bunch of bluegill on dries and tiny buggers.  Some of the gills were beautiful specimens.  We also got one black crappie, yellow perch, a number of small largemouth bass and some smallmouth.

smallmouth-bassThis smallie was our biggest fish of the day and he ate my popper in classic fashion.  He showed up underneath about three feet down and watched it pop twice without moving.  Then on the third pop he elevated slowly and sucked the fly in like a trout.  An awesome fish!

black-crappieIt’s been several successful outings in a row now.  Our fishing has finally turned on.  If Bob gets his truck back this afternoon we’ll hunt fish again tomorrow.  Perhaps go big!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
