Birthdays Were Made for Fishing

fly-fishingI hit the pillow last night with a plan to fish a lake that has few muskies but big muskies.  Granny and I were skunked here back in July but because it’s my birthday today, I felt the fish gods would deliver.  But that’s not the way fly fishing works and I should know that by now.  Especially at this ripe new age.

fish-birthdayNonetheless, the ingredients for a great birthday that can be controlled, were.  We are camping and we got up early and enjoyed coffee.  Today may have been the last coffee from our Yeti chairs of the year because of cold temperatures coming soon.  There was cloud cover but no wind.  Just colorful leaves gently falling from the trees.  It’s a majestic way to start any day.

CurrierAfter coffee we drove to our lake but before we launched the boat Granny made some killer breakfast sandwiches.  Once those were devoured we dropped the Blue Bathtub and went.  Granny rowed most of the time while I hucked my 9-weight and some big flies.  I fished hard for three hours.  Floating lineSinking line.  Deep.  Shallow over weeds.  I tried everything but didn’t see a musky.  That’s musky fishing.

I always fish on my birthday and some years are more productive than others.  Today was a rare blank.  But I have no complaints.  I was out doing what I love with my lady.  Now its time to head to Anglers for dinner and playoff baseball!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
