Early Season on A Wisconsin River

by | May 25, 2023 | fly fishing Wisconsin

fly-fishingMy first float down one of my local Wisconsin rivers last year didn’t happen until June 24.  That was a great day that led to at least a dozen more fun floats – most with my friend Bob Butler.  Bob and I have been chomping at the bit to get started again this year and on this gorgeous sunny day with a high temperature of 72° we made our first float.

fly-fishingIts hard to put in words how striking it is here in May.  My old Idaho stomping grounds were amazing during May as well but here its different.  Its so green its unbelievable.  A million different shades almost like in the rainforest.  And the huge number of birds species along with frogs and turtles and more, I’m loving it here.

smallmouth-bassOur fishing was ok.  We caught good numbers of fish but they were small and nothing ate on top.  Totals were something like eight smallmouth bass and five pike.  The biggest bass may have been 13” and longest pike about 22”.  We had no musky sightings.

Not many details on today only because I’m getting Granny on the water early tomorrow and then leaving for Canada on Saturday.  I’m a little short on time this week but stay tuned!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
