blog-March-3-2014-1-r.l.-winston-Fly-rodsFor those who haven’t heard yet, I’m proud to announce I’ve joined the R.L. Winston Rod Pro Advisory Team.  I joined the Winston Team in early January but with the madness of my speaking tour there’s been little time to celebrate.  This weekend, my first home in nearly two months, this thrilling news has sunk in.

blog-March-3-2014-Henry's Fork IdahoI purchased my first R.L. Winston fly rod thirty years ago, a 9-foot 4-weight.  The rod was my first top quality fly rod.  To this day I cherish that fine piece of equipment.  The green stick has taken so many huge trout it should be hanging over the mantle.  But no way, great fly rods are meant to be fished.

Most of you know I’ve endorsed Ross Reels for the past seven years and I’ll continue to do so.  Even better, I’ll also be endorsing Abel Reels.  How can this be?  Ross Reels went through many changes the last couple years.  They were purchased by Scientific Anglers.  Then Scientific Anglers was purchased by Orvis.  Orvis sold the Ross Reel part of the business to a company called The Mayfly Group.  The Mayfly Group already owned Abel.

In February The Mayfly Group approached me to stay on with Ross Reels and asked if I’d ever fished Abel Reels.  I was quick to say yes and that I own many Abel Reels that haven’t been out since I joined Ross seven years ago.  Good news, by joining Ross Reels I was joining Mayfly and I now promote the two best fly reels on the planet.

I now endorse R. L. Winston, Scientific Anglers, Ross Reels, Abel Reels and Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures.  I represent the finest fly rods ever made, the best fly lines, the top fly reels and the most reliable fly fishing travel company.  I am a very lucky guy!

Here is Winton’s recent news blast. . . .

According to Winston Rod Company Owner and Chairman, David Ondaatje, “I have admired Jeff for over 15 years, and am incredibly excited that he will be working with Winston more closely. Jeff is a world-renowned angler, artist and instructor, but also a true explorer, seeking out new waters, new species and new experiences in places few anglers have ever been. He represents the very best of what fly fishing has to offer, is one of most accomplished anglers in the world, and we are proud to have him join the Winston Pro Advisory Team where he will continue to explore multiple continents using our new Boron IIIX, LS and SX freshwater and saltwater fly rods…and then, of course, come back to share all of it with us.”

Some of his shows take you to destinations you’ve never heard of and will leave you in awe that such creatures can be enticed to eat a fly! Winston thirty years ago.  I cherish that rod and added many more since.  Whether I need a delicate presentation and incredible accuracy on my home waters for trout or effortless long casts for enormous rare fish 8,000 miles from home, I can count on my Winston fly rods.  These proven rods are simply unmatched.  I am thrilled and privileged to be part of the Winston Team and its long storied history.

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
