Up Before Daylight Again

Wisconsin-sunriseGetting up before 5 AM to go fishing has been tough lately.  It hasn’t been like a month ago when I popped from bed with pleasure.  I’ve really been dragging.  The only thing I want to do is flip over and keep sleeping.  So when Bob called me last night and asked me to be at his house at 5:30 AM to fish his lake with a buddy he has in town, I had to adjust my arrival closer to 7.  But I guess I love fishing, somehow I was French pressing my coffee at 4:50 AM and didn’t need an alarm to wake up.

lake-fishingThe morning was amazing – that’s probably the reason for the perky start.  When I hear the first robin sing I’m energized.  While most years the birds are done singing by August, we still have some robins singing like its spring.  There a few other birds milking it as well including a cardinal which is a fan favorite in this house.  I made it to Bob’s at 6 AM.  He and his friend Tim were already out and they motored over and fetched me.

crappieThe black crappie is sharp looking fish and great fun to catch.  They fall into the panfish category but they can be challenging to find.  Often in the heat of summer they school suspended in deeper water.  Today we were lucky to find them in the weeds in about 7 ft. of water.  We wrapped it before noon.  I’m glad I got up early!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
