Granny’s Shoulder Surgery

shoulder-surgeryGranny is resting and recovering well after her shoulder surgery last week.  She fell off a fence when we were in Baja last May and the tough ole girl fought the pain hoping to recover on her own this summer.  That’s because our health insurance sucks.

By July the pain was too much and she finally saw a doctor.  She had a torn labrum, partially detached bicep to shoulder and a completely separated supraspinatus.  Surgery was the only answer and the surgery was guaranteed six weeks out of work.

fishing-accidentsGranny didn’t want to leave her retail job in Jackson Hole in dire straits in the heat of summer.  She sucked up the pain another two months.  She said just knowing what was wrong and having the surgeon tell her the damage was done and things wouldn’t worsen made this decision easier.  So she set the surgery for when things calmed down and I brought her to the Driggs, ID clinic at 7 AM September 24 for the surgery.

The surgery took slightly over two hours.  She has five anchors (disintegrating screws) in her shoulder.  The surgeon took care of a few bone spurs while in there also so with luck she’ll be in better shape than before she fell off the fence.

Granny-CurrierHer recovery is 6 weeks in a sling and no moving the arm except with the physical therapist.  Then 6 months of physical therapy.  After that they say she should be at 85% of normal.  Then over the next year she will fight her way back to 100%.  She has a long battle but I was at her side when she fell – no doubt this could have been worse.

So from the glorious Amazon to now taking care of my girl.  She can’t do much with her right arm immobilized.  I’m the chef, house cleaner, grocery shopper and driving her to physical therapy each day.  I won’t be leaving Victor for more than a half a day for a while.  Honestly it should be kind of fun.  And it will be great to be home drinking coffee from my comfy chair by morning and Sierra Nevada’s and baseball playoffs at night.

fishing-giftsI should get caught up on things too.  I’m ready to do some art and promote my store.  If you haven’t checked out my store be sure and do so.  Christmas is around the corner!  And of course, I suspect I’ll squeeze in a few half day so trout fishing near home.  Expect more Granny updates each week!

Great news! Wishing her a problem feel recovery back to 100%. Not sure she’ll survive your 6 weeks of cooking but it’s more motivation to get better fast!

Jeff, sending healing wishes Granny’s way. Remember if you can spare 2-3 minutes for a quick video call or chat (Face Time if you have an iPhone or FB video chat), I can show you a wrinkle on the elbow stretches that makes them ore effective. Bill

Knowing you Granny, you will reach 100% in less time and you have a good nurse/housekeeper to help all the way.

Granny here’s hoping you mend well so we can toast cold Baja beverages again in May!

Granny and I would like to thank everyone for the warm wishes. The girl continues to do well and has every intention on fishing her heart out by spring. That may indeed include a return to Baja! Of course, all this is entirely dependent on her surviving my six weeks in the kitchen!

Granny… you better heal up. I’m still spending some time with my lady-friend’s parents up in northern Colorado at their “ranch”. Idaho’s not that far away that I can’t hop a flight and come out and pester the living hell out of you. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. Someone’s gotta keep Jeff outta trouble.

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
