The School of Trout – Beginner Class

School-of-TroutYou may remember I helped teach an Advance Dry Fly Class for the School of Trout back in August over on the Henry’s Fork.  The School of Trout also offers a Basic Trout Class each October and it runs for a week.  With Granny recovering from her surgery I opted out of this one, however, because she’s doing so well and my Mom is out here helping, I went over to teach yesterday.

fly-fishingMy drive up to the Henry’s Fork was brutal.  I had to be there to meet the folks for breakfast by 7:30 AM.  Normally to the Henry’s is a 1 hour drive.  But we had a snowstorm and the roads were hectic.  Furthermore, my four wheel drive wouldn’t engage and a headlight went out.  The drive up took me two hours and was bit more of an adventure than I would have liked.

Tom-RosenbauerThe day went fantastic despite we had to do the day indoors inside TroutHunter.  The students were awesome and it was good to catch up with my fellow instructors.  This class is larger than the Advanced and there are a few additional instructors.  My friend Tom Rosenbauer wasn’t there in August but for the Beginner Class he is leading the pack.  Tom is a longtime legend in our sport.

Trout-BumsI stayed the night up at TroutHunter and caught up with some of my fishing friends.  We watched some playoff baseball at the bar and had a great time.  This morning the sun was out but it was a mere 4°.  That’s too damn cold for October!  Nonetheless I enjoyed my drive back to Victor and its back to taking care of the girl and catching up on life.

fishing-giftsKeep in mind it’s almost that time of year again where you might need a Christmas gift for the angler that has everything.  Be sure to keep my art gifts in mind along with my custom Cliff Fly boxes and decals!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
