Granny and I could not have ended this extraordinary trip to Australia any better than we did tonight. In approximately 1994, Peter and Janet Homes À Court of Sydney, Australia entered the fly shop I worked at in Jackson Hole, WY. Peter and Janet were fairly new to fly fishing and there on a two week trip. I completely outfitted them and assisted their fish catching over there entire stay. They had a blast and came back next year.
The Homes À Court’s made lots of Jackson Hole friends including Granny and I and came every August for years. I took them fishing on the Teton River. We visited them at the cabin they rented on Fish Creek. These were fabulous times. I even had the pleasure of visiting them in Australia in 1999.
Unfortunately, Peter passed away in the early 2000’s. But this didn’t keep Janet from coming alone. She had a lot of friends in Jackson and she made a point to visit with us every time. We got her back out on the Teton River and each year she took us for a very fancy lunch somewhere in Jackson. Most often it was at Teton Pines.
About ten years ago during lunch, this day was somewhere out at Teton Village, Janet gave us the bad news that her doctor told her this was the last time she could do a long haul flight. It was her last time in Jackson Hole. Her last trip to the USA. I remember the hugs goodbye. We thought it would be the last time we ever saw her.
Janet is 90 years young now and still enjoying life in Sydney. We’ve stayed in touch all these years and when Granny and I officially put Aussie Fly Fishers on our 2024 schedule, I made damn sure to stop in Sydney. Tonight we had dinner with Janet. Knocked back a couple bottles of wine. And just had a fantastic and amazing time. What a closing to an incredible trip!
Don’t think you could end a trip any better… that is special
Yeah Lance, it truly was. What a great way to end an interesting last month of life!
I hear what your saying, the thoughts will bring smiles again buddy! You showed me that.
Thre relationships we develop fishing are a big part of why we fish. Very cool.
