Blogged Down – Catch Up Time

flyfishing-South-CarolinaI wasn’t planning to go dark on the blog since my New Jersey Fly Fishing Show update on January 27th.  I figured I’d share travel stories then post my schedule for The Atlanta Fly Fishing Show.  Instead, I blew off blogging the entire week and didn’t even post my Atlanta speaking schedule.  I guess that tells us something – I’ve been running on fumes.

Currier-fish-artThe shows have been really good.  NJ was the best its been since before Covid and the Atlanta show over this past weekend was excellent too.  This GA show is growing fast and although I don’t see the facts, attendance seemed to be the best ever.  For me its extra fun because I’ve spoke in this region for years and know tons of folks.  And they provided great turnouts for all my presentations and had me push the sharpies on all kinds of fun things.

Allen-ConstructionPart of the reason for not posting last week was the travel driving from NJ to Atlanta but also some of the fun we had between.  We left NJ midday on Monday January 27th and arrived in Moncks Corner, SC Tuesday afternoon.  Granny and I visited very good friends of ours that we haven’t seen in almost 20 years – Greg and Elizabeth Allen.  Greg worked for me in the Jackson Hole Fly Shop back in the late 1990’s and then guided in the Key’s.  After several years in FL they returned to their home area of Charleston.  They raised two great kids and started Allen Construction.

We stayed at their amazing family farm.  You could call it a private wildlife sanctuary.  They have a huge spread and last week it was loaded with thousands of ducks – mostly wood ducks.  There were numerous other birds from turkeys to songbirds and plenty of deer.  The Allen’s fed us, gave us tours in the side by side, led me to my first few largemouth of the year on the lake and took us to Fleet Landing for dinner in downtown Charleston.  It was an amazing visit and we crammed a ton of fun stuff in over a mere 48 hours.

Covington-GeorgiaThe Atlanta show ended Sunday afternoon.  Yesterday Granny and I took a late check out from the show hotel and caught up on emails, plane ticket needs, prepared a few things for our taxes which we do Friday, and simply got some rest.  We drove casually for FL from about noon to 8 PM.  The drive included a lunch stop in Covington at the Social Goat Tavern and last night we slept in the van at a rest area north of Jacksonville on the 95.  Not exactly our idea of camping but sometimes when you don’t know the area you just pull over and call it.

We are going to stay in FL for the next ten days or so.  We will visit my friends the Catino’s and Bruun’s whom I was with back in December when I flew down for a speaking gig.  Then we travel to Naples because I’m speaking for the Backcountry Fly Fishers banquet.  There will be some fishing so stay tuned!
