First Backpacking Trip Ever for the Nieces

by | Jul 11, 2018 | grand teton national park | 2 comments

The young ladies, my nieces, Sammy age 16 and Montana age 14, arrived on time today as planned.  After a morning of fishing and swimming on Jenny Lake Granny and I picked them up at the Jackson Hole airport at noon.  We grabbed the bags and they were ready to rock!

I don’t waste time.  The girls were tired from leaving their home in Amesbury, MA at 3:30 am (1:30 am our time) but I put them to work.  Tomorrow we leave for a three day trek through the Tetons.  This trip is their first ever backpacking trip.

Granny made an amazing dinner for us all and the girls were asleep before 8 pm.  The sun doesn’t even set until nearly 9 in Victor, Idaho but they were wrecked.  Tomorrow the games begin!

Jackson Hole – one of my favorite destinations – prefer to drive in – flying in can be quite nerve wracking.

To me its a spectacular flight. I do it 20 times a year though. And no doubt in my 31 years living here I do recall a couple whiteknucklers. Most were from winter landings. Thanks for reading the blog Tad!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
