Can’t Pass on a Rainy Day Fishing the Driftless

WisconsinGood luck for me – we woke up to rain this morning.  I was probably fishing a couple hours anyhow but this solidified one more outing down here in the Driftless with friends Jason Randall and Tim Flagler.  After two hot days you knew the rain would get the fish moving again.  We headed down the dirt roads about 20 minutes or so from Jason’s house and hit another of Jason’s haunts.

small-streamsIndeed there were a few bugs on the water.  Not many but enough were bluewing olives.  I put on a parachute and took a hike downstream with the guys.

reads-CreekJason and Tim stopped off along the way.  I bushwhacked my way further downstream and found a beautiful pool.  It was challenging for casting so I shortened my leader from 12 feet to 9 and went to work.  I love a good casting challenge.

brown-troutI’m guessing this particular pool gets skipped by most anglers.  There are plenty easier options for fishing.  I say this because not only was I fishing, but also a shy mink.  After he strutted off with a small trout in his mouth, I managed to catch about six beautiful little browns.

We called it a day around noon and fixed up one last meal at Jasons.  We have a ton of leftovers which suited us all perfect.  Granny and I hit the road immediately after for our four hour drive home.

ViroquaIt was a fantastic week down in the Wisconsin Driftless with lots of fish, but best of all, time with good friends.  I’ll be home over the weekend but I’ll be catching up on things and packing.  Over the next month I have some fun travels starting with a week in New England on Monday.  Not sure I’ll fish in NH but I am for sure fishing Cape Cod Friday- Sunday.  Life in the fast lane is back!

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
