Like most outdoorsman, I love the fall. I cherish every minute of October and these days I prefer relishing it in Wisconsin. But I’ve been gone a lot lately and it’s been building inside me that I’m missing out on my favorite time at home. Last night, the minute Granny got out of work we jumped in the Ruby Van and headed to one of our favorite boondocking campsites and today I wade fished a couple hours for musky.
The drive to camp was wonderful. We didn’t get started until 5:30 and it gets dark by 7 so we missed out on some foliage but it was still nice. I lit a camp fire and we sat out in our Yeti chairs listening to the calls of barred owls until it got too cold. This morning it was even colder but it went unnoticed because I couldn’t take my eyes off the colors on the water while I brewed our coffee.
While we packed a good camp dinner for last night, we forgot to bring anything for breakfast. It’s not a problem however here in northern WI. We found a little café and hammered an all-American day starter of bacon, eggs and hashbrowns. We were ready to fish.
I wade fished hard for about three hours along a river we normally float for muskies in October. I was able to wade inches from the top of my waders and could reach some proven spots with a long cast. But its musky fishing. None today. Not even a pike. Skunked. But it felt good to get out.
We packed it in earlier than we would have liked but we have a big week at home. Tomorrow my 83 years young mom is making her first visit to our WI home with my sister. It will be fantastic to see them both. My sister fishes so I’ll try to put her on a musky. Expect a report Thursday night.
Jeff,
A perfect Fall Wisconsin adventure – enjoy your Mom’s visit.

Its gonna be great! Thank you Tad
Sue and i send your Mom our regards. Good luck. Fall in Wisconsin is awesome!
She will appreciate that Howie!
Jeff, hearing you (rarely) get skunked too is heartwarming for me! If an angler of your caliber can’t scare one up, that’s reassuring to an angler of my caliber. Bill
