If you recall, Granny ended her Wisconsin fishing season about a week ago. She just plain assumed from looking at the calendar, that it would be too cold from there on out to go fishing. Finally she was wrong about something – ha!
While traveling home from Atlanta last night Granny texted me saying today’s high was predicted to be 58°. She told me to be ready to go catch a pike for dinner. I was tired when I read it but heck, when would I ever not go fishing with the girl when she wants to go. After a nice cup of coffee and some breakfast with friends in Hayward this morning, off we went with the boat in tow.
The verdict is that it was too nice. While we managed some decent fishing the first hour of our arrival when it was still cool and the wind was howling, fishing went downhill fast when the winds died and the thermometer actually touched 63°. Our end result was six pike and one small musky.
And all the pike were too large for us to eat. I feel like when they hit that 29-30 inch mark, they are on the way to being trophies and we release them. Today five were that size. The one eater of about 27” was barely hooked, so I let him go. Maybe today was Granny’s end to the season, but surely not mine.
And let’s not forget that Christmas is around the corner and I sell gifts for “The Angler that has Everything”. Be sure to visit my webstore and see the new whiskey glasses, my famous coffee mugs, frosted beer steins, sun shirts and hoodies. You can also order my durable vinyl decals from my friends at Pescador on the Fly.
Jeff,
Nice catch – Hope you all have a great week!
