A Stud Brown Trout and Some Coasters

September 26-28, 2025

fly-fishingI’m even further behind so another quick blog.  I had no business fishing three days in a row on Lake Superior but that’s exactly what I did.  It was on the books and a fun trip with Howie, Mike Neuman and another college buddy that has retired and moved to northern Wisconsin, Dave Kittaka.  The weather was gorgeous so we took a long boat ride for the Apostle Islands.

Dave-KittakaDave can throw a fly but there were already three of us casting at the same time.  That was a little much so he chucked lures and on Day 1 he hammered this huge 9 lb. brown and two coaster brook trout.  A truly incredible fish and the coasters too.  I had one follow my fly and I thought he ate it, but nothing.

fly-fishingOn Day 2 Dave couldn’t go so it was me, Howie and Mike.  I missed two nice fish to start the day.  Frustrating.  The waves were big and it was hard to stand.  Huge rollers that started 300 miles away on the north east end of the Great Lake and built up big by the time they got to us.  Waves were not an excuse.

Mike-Neuman-brook-troutThings were dead for hours afterwards but our persistence paid off.  Mike landed his first coaster brook trout.  We are thrilled to see some coasters around the Apostle Islands.  Mike picked up a small splake later but those two fish were it for Day 2.

Chequamegon-bayToday was Day 3 and instead of hitting the Apostle Islands we stayed in Chequamegon Bay and hunted smallmouth and pike.  It was another gorgeous one but a slow one for fishing.  Today I caught the only fish and it was far from a huge Chequamegon smallie.

Currier-lake-SuperiorThat’s it for fishing.  I’m back to grinding it out.  I have a lot to do for winter show preparation but I’m also heading to Idaho next Saturday to teach for the School of Trout on the Henry’s Fork.  So I’m getting my classes ready for the fun event.  I love my job!
