In Need of a Smallmouth Bass Fix

Outcast-striker-raftI leave for Labrador tomorrow and am not back until August 10th.  I’ve already been gone most of my Wisconsin fishing season.  Although my excursions away have been awesome, I am craving more smallmouth bass days.

smallmouth-bassThe worst part about me being away a ton this season is that Granny doesn’t fish when I’m gone.  Granny is also longing for a few nice smallies before we get hot to trot for fall muskies.  Being I’m packed and ready for Canada’s monster brook trout, today I took Granny to our favorite big bass haunt.

leech-bitesIt’s a weird year here in WI in that there have been far less mosquitoes than normal.  That’s not to say there aren’t other blood suckers taking their place.  Granny and I were on our little float in our Striker Raft early and were quick to donate blood to horseflies and leeches.

smallmouth-bassFishing was good.  Since halfway through last season I backed off my deep Clouser fishing and more often fish a big unweighted white deer hair fly.  A concoction without a name.  Its poorly tied – perhaps a fly I tied myself years ago.  Regardless, it works excellent and in short time Granny put a few nice smallmouth in the net.

smallmouth-bass-Granny-CurrierI’m in need of a good night sleep before two long travel days so I won’t elaborate, but Granny did well.  She managed about a dozen smallies of decent size and two pike.  We even had a curious muskellunge follow.  As much fun as it would have been to land the sneaky big predator we’re glad he didn’t fall for our tricks.  It’s far too warm to mess with musky during the peak of summer.  Plus, smallies like this are even better to me!

smallmouth-bassI honestly didn’t feel like I had time for a full day on the water before the start of tomorrows excursion but I pulled it off and I’m delighted I did.  Both Granny and I needed a serious smallie fix and we got it.

smallmouth-bassThat’s all for Wisconsin for a couple weeks.  Stay tuned for possibly some of the top blogs of the year.  To get an idea, start here and see how Labrador went last time back in 2015.
