Mike Neuman (Numzie) and Michael Lodge and I had an absolute blast in Sydney yesterday. I posted yesterdays blog around 10 am Australia time right after we arrived off our international flight. Then we hopped on a train right from the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel to a stop near the famous Opera House. We indulged in a few beers such as the Copper Pale Ale and the Young Henry’s Newtowner at local pubs and tap rooms. We sat outside and relished the heat under the southern hemisphere sun in shorts and flip flops. Then we crushed classic Australian cheeseburgers with pickled beets on top.
I attempt to defeat jetlag the minute I arrive at a faraway destination. The trick, get on the local time schedule. Don’t nap and stay up till 9 pm. We didn’t exactly make it. Though we managed to have good energy most of the day in Sydney, by 4 pm we were getting delirious. That’s not a good way to be in any major city around the world. We took the train back to our hotel and arrived shortly after 5 pm. We checked into our rooms. I’m sharing with Numzie and by the time I got out of the shower he was snoring. Unfortunately, I too fell asleep before 6 pm.
So, if we were so tired, why would we suffer and try to stay awake until 9 pm? Simple. We aren’t on Australia time yet and until we get there, we will continue to struggle to stay awake past 6 pm. Sure enough, I personally slept poorly from going to bed too early and today at 6 pm, my body is going to want to sleep again. But today I will stay up till 9!
We got an early start on the travel again today and the three of us are presently flying from Sydney to Nhulunbuy Australia. Nhulunbuy is where we sleep tonight. Then tomorrow, we board the Wildcard vessel and head for the Wessel islands and start fishing.
Australia is huge and we are on a layover at the Cairns Airport enjoying some beverages at the Saltwater Creek Taphouse Cairns Airport brew pub. It was a three hour flight from Sydney to here and it’s another two hours for Nhulunbuy. We arrive there at 5:30 pm and meet up with my other three friends, Jeff Smith, Steve Fitsimons and Therese Rappazini. Meeting more friends should make it easier to stay up until 9 pm. If anything they should keep us up because they got to Australia several days ago.
None of us can wait to get on the Wildcard tomorrow. In the meantime, my webstore with my coffee mugs, beers steins, whiskey glasses, hoodies and sun shirts is open for business. You can also buy my fish decals from my friends at Pescador on the Fly. Get your Christmas Gifts for the Anglers that have everything!
