Summer on my home water here in Northern Wisconsin is almost over for me. That’s because in a week I head for the Red River in Manitoba for channel catfish and a few other cool fish. Then its straight up to Gangler’s North Seal River Lodge. I should get home from Canada on September 12th but I have a quick turn around to head to British Columbia for the World Masters Fly Fishing Championships and then I’m not home until October 2nd. I feel like I need to fish my butt off this week but really I need to get packed and make sure all my work is done.
Packing is the grueling part of fly fishing travel. Especially when there’s a long list of species involved and numerous flights like these trips. But I’ve been nibbling at it. Enough that when Bob suggested an early morning on a nearby lake, I jumped for it.
I’m not surprised to say however, it was a slow one. I believe Granny and I hit the prime game fish feeding day earlier this week. That big wind we battled continued the last few days and left us with a major heatwave. Today will hit 87°.
Bob and I caught about a half dozen bluegill and a midget of a pike. We couldn’t buy a largemouth bass which is highly unusual. Such is life. But add another sunrise with a fly rod in hand to what has been no less than an incredible fishing summer.
