Wessel Islands Australia 2025

flyfishing-AustraliaIt’s been another amazing year of fishing but it’s not done yet.  Over the last 30 hours, since the minute Thanksgiving came to an end, I’ve been traveling for Sydney Australia with my buddy Mike Neuman.  Numzie is one of five anglers I’m hosting to Australia for Yellow Dog Flyfishing that include some of my Seychelles regulars Steve Fitzsimons, Therese Rappazini, Michael Lodge, Jeff Smith.  Numzie is the only first timer and this is a big one for him.  Prior to this, he’s been to Mexico.

flyfishing-AustraliaTo be more specific, we’re headed to the Wessel Islands in the far north of Australia where my friend Joshua Hutchins of Aussie Fly Fisher has booked us the Wildcard, a premium 70ft vessel we will live on over the next 11 days and access some of the worlds most distant and exotic flats.

AustraliaWe won’t be far from where Granny and I fished with Joshua in September 2024 on the West Cape.  While the fishing should be similar, one difference is that the Anak permit, which stood me up last year, is around but not in the numbers like on the Cape.  Instead, there are lots of the beautiful Indo-Pacific permit which I’ve had the pleasure of catching my share in the Seychelles and St. Brandon’s over the years.  In addition to permit we expect opportunities for giant trevally, golden trevally, brassy trevally, diamond trevally and many more species including the elusive blue bastard.

AustraliaAbout the same time Numzie and I landed in Sydney after our 15 hour Delta flight from Los Angeles, Michael Lodge landed on his Qantas flight.  The other three have been vacationing in Australia for a few days already.  Despite Numzie, Mike and I being completely haggard from the travel, its only 10 am Australia time so we’re headed into Sydney to check things out and get a jump start on our fight against the jetlag caused by our 17 hour time change.

This should be a good one!  In the meantime, my webstore with my coffee mugs, beers steins, whiskey glasses, hoodies and sun shirts is open for business.  Get your Christmas Gifts for the Anglers that have everything!
