Today Steve Berry and I only had time to dabble in the urban fishing here in Phoenix. Yesterday’s double speaking gig had me in need of a little extra rest this morning. Then I had to reorganize and get prepared for tonight’s event with Desert Fly Casters. Once I had everything in order we had a couple hours. But when you toss in the Phoenix big city traffic, it turned into about an hour of fishing.
We fished a canal where a few years ago I caught my largest ever grass carp. The fish were there today but we each had one fish eat and we lost them. Then it was full on lock jaw for the oversized fish. Another friend and world class fly tier, Mike Faulkinbury arrived while we were there. After we left he worked the fish hard and landed one of medium size. Mikes a damn good angler and we plan to fish with him later this week.
My gig tonight went absolutely fantastic. We had a crowd just under 100 people which these days, at a fly fishing club, is a big number. It was great. I delivered a fan favorite, “Streamer Tricks for More and Larger Trout”. I met a carp angler, Kris Bare, who works at the Pheasant Tail Fly Fishing fly shop here in Phoenix. He was kind enough to invite me and Steve to join him on a canal tomorrow morning. He’s young and I can tell he’s fishy. I have no more gigs, just fishing left. Tomorrow should be great!
And remember to check out the podcast I did with April Vokey and her Anchored Podcast last week. You can listen/watch by clicking here.
Always a blast, and I always learn more fishy tips from you Jeff.
Same goes for fishing with you Mike. I never would have nymphed up those tilapia. That was fun!
