Flying Solo in Tiger Country Again

Flying Solo in Tiger Country Again

The rain returned last night.  I woke up in standing water in the bottom of my leaky tent.  The night was quite uncomfortable.  Luckily the rain slowed down to a drizzle by morning.  I wandered down to the confluence pool nearly in darkness hoping for a hungry beast...

Double Trouble – Fly Fishing for Mahseer in Bhutan

Double Trouble – Fly Fishing for Mahseer in Bhutan

As suspected everyone woke up a bit slow today.  We had a big fun night around the campfire after a wild and sketchy day on the river.  Although we had a clear water tributary to fish it wasn’t that great looking so sleeping in to a whopping 6 AM wasn’t a big deal. ...

A Mahseer Adventure in Bhutan

When we went to bed at 10 the stars were brilliant.  At 1 AM I was awoken by flashes of lightening.  Then came rain.  And I mean a serious downpour.  It came down so heavy that my tent didn’t just start leaking drips but rather pouring water through the seams.  But...

A Float into the Unknown of Bhutan

A Float into the Unknown of Bhutan

We went to bed early because it started to drizzle last night.  At about 4 AM the moisture stepped up to a light rain.  Bhutan is on the verge of monsoon season so everyone was sort of looking around at the clouds nervously this morning.  We were starting a five day...

Dawes’s Long Awaited Mahseer!

Dawes’s Long Awaited Mahseer!

There’s a massive dam project underway on the Puna Tsang River.  The project is tough to look at as you drive along, not only because it’s a real mess, but also because you’re nearly head-on with gigantic dump truck after dump truck.  And if you veer too much away...

From Bhutans Trout to Golden Mahseer

Dawes and I got some rest this morning, something that’s been unheard of since we arrived three days ago.  The reason we had the morning off was because our true mission of finding and catching mahseer started this afternoon.  Jon Miceler of the World Wildlife Fund...

Idaho Sets Sail in Bhutan

I’m still not completely adjusted to the drastic time change here in Bhutan.  I was up making instant coffee before 5 AM.  This actually works to our advantage however because we get on the road early.  We pulled out of Haa Valley at 5:30 AM and back over the pass to...

Fly Fishing the Haa Valley of Bhutan

Fly Fishing the Haa Valley of Bhutan

Yesterday was a fun day of fishing – what Mike Dawes and I can remember of it.  Seriously, going straight from 40 hours of travel to the water immediately upon landing in Bhutan was grueling and both of us were undoubtedly delirious by the time we reeled in.  But we...

Fly Fishing in Bhutan Begins

This morning was a three hour flight on Drukair from Bangkok to some city in India.  We stayed on the plane for the short layover then climbed up over the Himalayan Foothills more like a rocket ship than an Airbus 319 Jet.  We immediately saw several of the world’s...

The Long Journey to Bhutan

Mike Dawes and I are still en-route to Bhutan.  It’s a long haul.   So far it’s was the early drive from Victor to Jackson.  Then the flight from Jackson to SLC then to Portland to Tokyo and tonight we arrived in Bangkok at midnight.  It’s been 31 hours from home.  ...

I started fly fishing at age 7 in the lakes and ponds of New England cutting my teeth on various sunfish, bass, crappie and stocked trout. I went to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where I graduated with a Naturalist Degree while I discovered new fishing opportunities for pike, muskellunge, walleyes and various salmonids found in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

From there I headed west to work a few years in the Yellowstone region to simply work as much as most people fish and fish as much as most people work. I did just that, only it lasted over 20 years working at the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson, WY where I departed in 2009. Now it’s time to work for "The Man", working for myself that is.

I pursue my love to paint fish, lecture on every aspect of fly fishing you can imagine and host a few trips to some of the most exotic places you can think of. My ultimate goal is to catch as many species of fish on fly possible from freshwater to saltwater, throughout the world. I presently have taken over 440 species from over 60 countries!
